Senior Fitness by Ruth Heidrich, Ph.D. 219 pp., paperback, $17.00 Review by Barbara A. Ellicott, Ed.D. Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and Longevity by Ruth Heidrich, PhD, is endorsed by Neal Barnard, MD, founder and president of PCRM (Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine). This gem is a marvelous contribution to the field of health and fitness and MUST reading for every health-conscious individual regardless of age! One of the most important messages that Dr. Heidrich would like her readers to get is that so many diseases/conditions may be prevented or reversed! Ruth Heidrich is living proof that what she advocates works! "I have lived my experiment.", she states. Not only has she probably cured herself of breast cancer, which had already metastacized when she was in her 40s over 25 yrs. ago, but thanks to her vegan/exercise lifestyle, she survived two nearly fatal accidents when she was hit by trucks while cycling. She refused to listen to "no hope without chemo and radiation" predictions from so many MD's. One doctor, who gave her a very different approach, was John McDougall, MD, who has done research into the effect of diet on breast cancer. He told her, "If you want to save your life, change your diet." Ruth did, and, in fact, completed her first Ironman Triathlon two years after her diagnosis. This involves swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles, and then running a 26.2 marathon! She then went on to win over 900 gold medals in races of all types and in international competition. Dr. Heidrich shows how both diet and exercise play a role in the cause of the top ten killers of people, plus how the top ten drugs that most Americans use can be avoided completely. She shows how to not just "prevent" disease but, more important, how to quit CAUSING these diseases. She goes through each of the major diseases and conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, obesity, Alzheimer's Disease, and more. There is something for everyone in this book regardless of age. Ruth Heidrich, now 72 yrs. of age, was named by Living Fit magazine, as one of the ten fittest women in North America; the other nine were all under 35 years of age! She has spent almost 40 yrs of her life in marathon running and Ironman Triathlons. She has written this book to motivate seniors to become physically fit and healthy. Her equation is RD + RE = SF (Right Diet + Right Exercise = Senior Fitness). Ruth says, "I feel confident in saying that attaining true fitness and empowering the latter half of our lives both mentally and physically is impossible without the foundation of a healthy, disease free body." Dr. Heidrich is a graduate of UCLA and holds a Master's degree in Psychology and a doctorate in Health Education. She has also taught in this field at the University of Hawaii.
