On Nutrition and Physical Performance:
A Handbook for Athletes and Fitness Enthusiasts
Dr. Douglas Graham

(89 pp., $15.00)

Review by Rozalind Gruben

If the value of a book was measured by its size and weight, the telephone directory would be the literary basis for a significant portion of the nation's education. This latest masterpiece from the pen of Dr. Douglas Graham, holds within its 118 pages a quality of information that is both rare and of immeasurable value to athletes and health enthusiasts alike.

Over the years, the pursuit of athletic excellence has forced human performance towards the boundaries of that which is physically possible. The shelves of book stores, world-wide, sag under the load of texts on sports nutrition as efforts are made to support such intense physical endeavors. The authors mostly share a similar, if not identical, approach. In almost every case their academic obsession to dissect and fragment the laws of nature and physics can only be matched by the distorted and perverted dietary habits they recommend. Somewhere along the line humankind has lost sight of the fact that the entire complexity of life forms, from the single celled organelle to entire ecosystems, is far greater than its component parts.

In this eye opening book Dr. Graham takes a whole new approach to nutrition that puts fragmented thinking back together again. He takes the reader by the hand and guides them towards the superior daily food choices that can make the difference between athletic participation and athletic excellence.

The non-athletic will also glean many insightful and profound pointers for ways in which to improve their health and energy levels. Printed in a non-ostentatious way, and easy to read format, the book's presentation reflects the clear and simple truths of its contents. Subjects covered include: The Role of Sugars, Minerals, Water, Sleep, Protein, Fat, Starch, Vitamins and Enzymes. Other topics relate to weight control, stimulants, sports drinks, tips for optimum athletic recovery and food combining. Sample meals are given and charts relating to the nutrient contents of specific foods are clear and precise.

Consistent with Dr. Graham's popularity as an inspirational teacher, the bottom of each page offers a quote or nutritional insight that is sure to get your blood pumping with motivation and brain cells buzzing with new awareness. The book is sandwiched between numerous quotes from people the author has worked with such as Martina Navratilova, who states: "My strength and endurance both improved noticeably, as did my on and off court recovery. I would recommend Dr. Graham to any athlete."

Dr. Don Greene, sports psychologist to the U.S. Olympic Diving Team reported: "I started feeling better immediately, had much more energy, and recommended Dr. Graham to the entire diving team."

Any concept remains a belief or disbelief, and does not qualify for judgment, until it is experienced in the fullness of its reality. I encourage you to invest in this gem of a book whose price does not do justice to its true value. Read it, apply it and only then evaluate it. I am confident that all who do so in earnest will come to consider this the most important book on sports nutrition that they have ever read.

*Editor's note: I wholeheartedly concur! This is the best book if its kind. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in healthful living and fitness.
