Review by Lennie Mowris

The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham is the most comprehensive guide that has surfaced thus far in the raw food movement. In fact, its flourishing sales and readers' personal results are nothing short of revolutionary.

For raw food enthusiasts who have trouble staying 100% raw, or those who aren’t getting the desired results with raw food, this book unravels the common problems people face on this path, and gives the blueprint for success. Dr. Graham breaks down his ideas in a clear and logical fashion, while providing ample references to back up his claims. He also answers virtually every pertinent question that has come up about raw food eating over his 30 years of lecturing and counseling, making this an unparalleled resource guide.

80/10/10 stands for the components of the diet: a minimum of 80% carbohydrate, with a maximum of 10% protein and 10% fat. The diet is comprised of fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts and seeds.

The low-fat diet isn’t new. Doctors around the globe have recommended eating less fat and increasing carbohydrate consumption for decades. But 80/10/10 goes where many fail to tread, explaining why a low-fat diet is best (and it's not all about avoiding heart disease).

Have you ever wondered how candida forms or why people are diabetic? Have you ever had problems with high or low blood sugar? Do you suffer endless bread cravings when you attempt a raw diet? The answers are found in one little word: “fat.”

Did you know the average raw food enthusiast consumes roughly 65% or more of their calories from fat? I didn’t know it was possible, but this is what the analyses of raw diets has shown. Dr. Graham knows the realities well—he has observed and coached tens of thousands of raw fooders over the past 30 years. The ramifications of such a fatty diet are dire, and the realities are thoroughly explained in this book. I was disturbed to learn how far I had strayed from the correct diet, but pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to turn this around.

The 80/10/10 Diet carries fruit from the porcelain side dish to the status of a silver-platter entrée. No longer is carbohydrate only to be thought of as refined sugar, bread, rice and potatoes. And no longer is fruit to be linked with refined sugar or thought of as too low in calories for a sustaining meal. Nor is it to be blamed for causing candida and other blood sugar and metabolic disturbances. It made perfect sense to me when I took the time to consider that fruit is sweet, juicy, attractive to all of my senses and satisfying when adequate calories are consumed. And in terms of nutrient content, fruit is superior to all other foods.

However, this is not an all-fruit diet. The diet includes on average a minimum of a pound of vegetables, including greens, each day. This is almost twice the recommendation of most other raw health educators. It is no secret that greens are good for us; however, vegetables provide little or no calories. For this reason they are said to be inadequate as the basis for a diet. Since our caloric requirement can’t come from vegetables, the choice for every raw fooder becomes simple: fruit or fat? As Dr. Graham abundantly demonstrates, a fruit-based diet and healthful living practices comprise the most effective strategy for vibrant health.

This isn’t a book just for raw fooders—it’s a book for any health-conscious person, because it teaches accurate nutritional science along with a simple, natural, whole and delicious diet, and is backed by copious results. The 80/10/10 Diet belongs on the shelf of anyone who cares about their diet and health.
